Description & Effect

"Through the Looking Glass" presents an unparalleled exploration into the intricate world of magic, meticulously crafted from the esteemed lecture notes of Gabi Pareras. Originally prepared for his influential presentations at Buffalo Get Together and The Session, these re-edited texts offer a deep dive into the theoretical underpinnings that define truly captivating magic. This seminal work is an indispensable resource for magicians, enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by the psychology and artistry of illusion, providing a framework for understanding not just 'how' magic is done, but 'why' it resonates so profoundly.

PART I: The Performer's Art and the Magic Self

Delve into "APPROACHING FICTIONAL MAGIC," where Gabi Pareras meticulously dissects the "Artistic communicative process." This section illuminates how a performer crafts a believable magical reality, transforming mere tricks into genuine illusions. Featuring the thought-provoking routine "I have as much as you," readers will gain a new perspective on the prestidigitator's role in creating an immersive, magical experience that transcends the ordinary. It's an essential read for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of magical communication and self-presentation.

PART II: Engaging the Spectator and the Audience

Explore the critical relationship between the performer and their audience in "EDUCATING THE SPECTATOR'S GAZE." Pareras draws upon master insights like Arturo de Ascanio’s "Sliding Gaze," "Formal Design," and the intriguing "Waiter Theory." This part is dedicated to understanding how spectators perceive and interpret magic, offering practical psychological frameworks to guide their attention and enhance their astonishment. Learn how to sculpt the audience's perception, ensuring every performance leaves an indelible mark.

PART III: The Essence of Magic and the Act Itself

"BEYOND THE METHOD" challenges conventional thinking about magic, moving past mere mechanical execution to explore its profound impact. This section features compelling discussions on "TWO SUBJECTIVITIES" and the crucial distinction between "TRICK VS MAGIC." Gabi Pareras offers profound reflections on the magic experience, urging readers to consider the deeper, often unarticulated, connection formed between the illusionist and the observer. It's a philosophical journey that redefines what magic truly means, urging practitioners to seek not just applause, but genuine wonder.
