Matt’s academic background includes atomic physics research at Durham University, where he earned the Institute of Physics’ Postgraduate Lecturer Award and had his research featured on their diary cover. He later joined the Education department at Thinktank Science Museum, Birmingham, further honing his skills in public engagement.

Science magician Dr Matt Pritchard is a Curator of Wonder. His amazing performances both inspire and inform. Matt loves being creative and is passionate about simplifying the complex.

As an independent science communicator he works with 100+ schools a year, collaborates with universities on their outreach and works with organisations like the Science Museum Group and Big Bang fairs. Last year he spoke at TEDxBrum and the Science of Magic Association conference, contributed a chapter to a teaching handbook on science and religion, and was featured in the Huffington Post.

Previously Matt conducted atomic physics research at Durham University, where he won the Institute of Physics’ Postgraduate lecturer award and had one of his stylised research images feature on The Institute of Physics’ diary cover. He subsequently went on to work within the Education department at Thinktank Science Museum, Birmingham.

In addition to this experience, he has spent the last 18 years working as a professional magician and is an Associate of the Inner Magic Circle – one of only 300 people in the world to hold this distinction. In 2018 he won their Hoffman Memorial competition for his essay on the compatibility of science and magic.
